CHANGING NAMES - SHARING GROUNDS - GROUNDS RE-NAMED - MISCELLANY

 

CHANGING TEAM NAMES.

 

Those teams who have played league games under two or more different names against Middlesbrough

 

ARSENAL  -     Woolwich Arsenal to 1914 then just Arsenal

 

BIRMINGHAM CITY  -   Small Heath to 1905, then plain Birmingham up to 1945 and Birmingham City thereafter.

 

AFC BOURNEMOUTH  -   Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic to 1971 then AFC Bournemouth

 

BURTON UNITED -    Burton Swifts in 1901 became Burton United

 

LEICESTER CITY -   Leicester Fosse changed in 1919 to Leicester City

 

LEYTON ORIENT -   Clapton Orient up to 1946 then Leyton Orient to 1966, just plain Orient from then until 1987 when it was back to Leyton Orient.

 

MANCHESTER UNITED -   Newton Heath changed in 1902 to Manchester United

 

PORT VALE -    Burslem Port Vale became Port Vale, 1911

 

SWANSEA CITY   -    Swansea Town until 1970 when it changed to Swansea City

 

SAME GROUND - DIFFERENT HOME TEAM

 

Selhurst Park  CRYSTAL PALACE

Palace have ground shared with CHARLTON ATHLETIC, (2 Boro visits), when Charlton left The Valley and then ground shared with WIMBLEDON (5 Boro visits) after they vacated Plough lane.

 

Leeds Road  HUDDERSFIELD

Following the fire at Valley Parade BRADFORD CITY spent season 1985/86 playing home games at Elland Road, Leeds Road, or Odsall Stadium. For the visit of Middlesbrough’s they made use of Huddersfield’s ground at the time.

 

Maine Road  MANCHESTER CITY

Also 3 games v MANCHESTER UNITED,       Old Trafford suffered bomb damage during the Second World War so Manchester United shared Manchester City’s ground for 3 seasons.

 

St.James’ Park  NEWCASTLE UNITED

Also 1 game  v SUNDERLAND,       Roker Park closed following crowd trouble (1902/03)

 

Vale Park  PORT VALE

Also 1 game  v STOKE CITY       Storm damage at Stoke’s Victoria Ground (1975/76)

 

Upton Park  WEST HAM UNITED

Also 1 game  v CHARLTON ATHLETIC,       Charlton Athletic's 2nd home base after leaving The Valley

 

Loftus Road QUEENS PARK RANGERS

Fulham vacated Craven Cottage for a while and shared QPR’s ground to include 2 Boro games in 2003

 

And us!

Victoria Ground HARTLEPOOL

When recovering from the Liquidation Order in 1986 and there being no certainty that Ayresome Park would be available the opening fixture of season 1986/87, at home to Port Vale, was switched to Hartlepool’s ground.

 

 

SAME GROUND - DIFFERENT NAME

 

Sheffield Wednesday - Owlerton changed to Hillsborough 1914

 

Walsall - Hillary Street changed to Fellows Park around 1930

 

 

Miscellaneous Items of Interest

 

The Official Opening of St.Andrews Birmingham was on 26th.December 1906 for a Division One game with Middlesbrough.

 

Middlesbrough have played Port Vale on 7 grounds. Linthorpe Road, Ayresome Park, Victoria Ground (Hartlepool), Cellnet Riverside Stadium, and at 3 locations in The Potteries

 

Although QPR have played on the greatest number of home grounds all QPR v Middlesbrough games in the capital have been at Loftus Road.

 

Middlesbrough’s game at Walsall in April 1901 was played at West Bromwich Road. Walsall started that season at Hillary Street (later named Fellows Park) but experienced financial problems and were forced to revert to playing their matches on a former ground when they were unable to pay the rent at Hillary Street.
